About Salem
Situated on the banks of the Thirumanimutharu river in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, Salem is a major city within the Salem district. Salem is the third largest metropolitan region in the state, only surpassed by the metropolitan regions of Chennai and Coimbatore. It is the fifth largest urban agglomeration in the state. The city occupies 124 square kilometers. Mangoes, sago, steel, textiles, and silver anklets are among Salem’s main exports.
History
Jainism and Buddhism arrived during the reign of Bogar, a famous Tamil Siddhar, in the third century BCE. The finding of Roman Emperor Tiberices Claudices Nero’s (37–68 CE) silver coins in Koneripatti of Salem in 1987 provides evidence of the existence of a highly developed cultural and economic community in the area two millennia ago, during the early Common Era. Subsequently, the Pandya dynasty began to govern the Salem region.
The Pallava dynasty then emerged in Salem, which was succeeded by the arrival of Mahendra Varma Pallava and the development of Saivite principles. Narasimha Varma Pallava took over as Mahendra Varma Pallava’s successor. The Pandya dynasty soon came to dominate Salem.
Geography
At an average elevation of 278 meters (912 feet), Salem is situated at 11.67°N 78.14°E. Hills encircle the city on all sides: the Shevaroy Hills to the northeast, Godumalai to the east, Kanjamalai to the west, and Jarugumalai to the south. Kariyaperumal Hill is located in Salem’s southwest. The city is split in half by the Thirumanimutharu River, which runs through it. The oldest area of Salem is the fort area.
Climate
There’s a tropical savanna in Salem. The months of January and February are usually pleasant; the hot summer starts in March and reaches its peak in April. Thunderstorms before the monsoon season happen in April and May. June through September is when the Southwest monsoon season occurs. October through December is when the northeast monsoon happens.
Administration
The Salem district’s administrative center is Salem. The town was established in 1867 as a municipality. In 1979, it was elevated to a special-grade municipality, and on April 1, 1994, it became a municipal corporation. Each of the 72 wards in the Salem municipal corporation has an elected council member. The six departments that comprise the municipal corporation are engineering, revenue, public health, city planning, information technology (IT), and general administration and personnel. A municipal commissioner oversees all six departments.
Economy
Salem, which has over 125 spinning mills, weaving units, and clothing units, is a significant textile hub in Tamil Nadu. It had fewer spinning mills until the 1960s. After the 1960s, the region saw a rise in private handloom weaving, and in the 1980s, the textile industry grew, establishing significant spinning mills and dyeing facilities to support the sector. In addition, the region is home to several sago factories that produce starch. In the Salem district, tapioca processing is carried out by 650 industrial units on 34,000 hectares (130 sq mi) of land dedicated to cassava.
