About Gadag

Gadag is an area in the state of Karnataka, India. It became its own district in 1997, before that it was part of Dharwad district. In 2011, about 35% of its population lived in cities. The total number of people in Gadag increased by 13% between 1991 and 2001. Gadag district shares its borders with Bagalkot, Koppal, Vijayanagara, Haveri, Dharwad, and Belgaum districts. Gadag is well-known for its historical temples, mainly built during the time of the Western Chalukya Empire. It has seven sub-regions called talukas: Gadag, Gajendragad, Ron, Shirhatti, Nargund, Lakshmeshwar, and Mundargi.

History:

The ‘Gadag inscription,’ which is really old writing, talks about a guy named Taila who was really strong and scared his enemies in a battle. This battle happened near a river called the Godavari, and it was a big deal. There was also a guy named Keshava who fought in the battle, and he impressed Taila.

In the year 1006, a guy named Lenka Keta fought bravely in a battle called Unukallu, probably against the Cholas. Sadly, he died in that battle. There’s another writing from the year 1008 that talks about a place called Kaldugu being attacked. It seems like there was some trickery by a person named Perggade.

Another inscription talks about a guy named Ballala who won a battle with just cavalry, which means soldiers on horses. He defeated a general named Brahmana, who had a big army with elephants.

Geography:

Gadag is situated in the northern part of Karnataka and shares its borders with several neighboring districts. To the north, it borders Bagalkot district, while Koppal district lies to the east. In the southeast, Gadag is adjacent to Vijayanagara district, while Haveri district is to the southwest. The district’s western boundary touches Dharwad district, and to the northwest, it shares borders with Belgaum District. Gadag has a mix of urban and rural areas, with a significant portion of the population residing in towns and cities. The district’s landscape includes fertile plains, rivers, and historical sites, making it a region of cultural and historical significance in Karnataka.

Demographics:

In 2011, Gadag district had a total of about 1,064,570 people living there. To give you an idea, it’s ranked 426th among all the districts in India in terms of population. People in this area are somewhat close together, with about 229 people living in each square kilometer of land. When we look at the number of men and women, there are 978 women for every 1000 men.

When it comes to reading and writing, about 75 out of every 100 people here can do it, which is not too bad. Around 35% of the folks live in cities.

The majority of people in Gadag district follow the Hindu religion, making up about 85% of the population. The second-largest group follows Islam, with about 13.5%. There’s also a notable number of Jains, about 6,000 of them, which is the third-largest religious group.

People mainly speak Kannada here, which is the language spoken by about 85% of the population. Urdu is the second most spoken language, used by about 8.37%, especially in cities. Another language called Lambadi is spoken by about 3% of the people in the district.
