Tirap district is nestled in the southeastern part of Arunachal Pradesh, India. It shares borders with Assam, Myanmar, Changlang, and Longding districts. The district’s name is derived from the River Tirap, originating in Laju Circle, flowing from southeast to northeast before merging into the Buri-Dihing river in Assam. This region also shares boundaries with Nagaland and Assam.
Geography
Geographically, Tirap district covers an area of 2,362 square kilometers, roughly equivalent to Canada’s Cornwall Island. The elevation varies from 200 meters in the northwest to 4,000 meters in the Patkai Hills. Following its bifurcation, the district’s area was reduced to 1,170 square kilometers.
Demography
As per the 2011 census, Tirap district had a population of 111,975, similar in size to the nation of Grenada. This places it at the 613th position in India among 640 districts. The district boasts a population density of 47 people per square kilometer and witnessed a population growth rate of 11.63% from 2001 to 2011. The sex ratio in Tirap stands at 931 females for every 1,000 males, with a literacy rate of 52.23%.
Language
Tirap district is linguistically diverse, home to tribes like the Nocte, Konyak, and Wancho, who traditionally followed Animism but have largely converted to Christianity.
