About Kannur

Kannur, a district in Kerala, India, nestled on the southwest coast, boasts historical significance and breathtaking beauty. Its namesake city, Kannur, formerly known as Cannanore, derives its identity from the Malayalam name “Kannur.” To the north lies Kasaragod District, while Kozhikode district borders to the south. Mahé district embraces its southwestern border, and Wayanad District adorns the southeast. To the east, the Western Ghats create a natural boundary, sharing it with Karnataka’s Kodagu district, while the Arabian Sea graces the west. The district’s pinnacle, Paithalmala, soars at 1,372 meters. It encompasses Mahé, a Union Territory of Puducherry. Established in 1957, Kannur District is a captivating blend of culture and geography.

History

The district boasts an ancient history, with traces of human settlement dating back to the Neolithic era, evident through rock-cut caves and megalithic burial sites. The Taliparamba-Kannur-Thalassery region is abundant in megalithic treasures, such as rock-cut caves, dolmens, burial stone circles, and menhirs. During the Sangam period (1st–5th century CE), Kannur served as the seat of a formidable kingdom centered around Ezhimala. Additionally, the historical significance extends to its identification as the ancient port of Naura, mentioned in the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, located north of Muziris. This rich heritage makes Kannur a captivating destination for history enthusiasts and explorers.

Demography

Based on the 2018 Statistics Report, Kannur district boasts a population of 2,615,266, with a population density of 882 individuals per square kilometer (2,280/sq mi).[40] During the decade from 2001 to 2011, the district experienced a population growth rate of 4.84%. In the 2011 Census of India, Kannur was ranked 170th among all districts in the country out of a total of 640. Remarkably, Kannur exhibits the highest sex ratio in India, with 1133 females for every 1000 males, and a commendable literacy rate of 95.10%. Additionally, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes constitute 3.30% and 1.64% of the population respectively. Malayalam serves as the primary language, spoken by 98.88% of the populace, while small minorities converse in Tamil, Hindi, and Kannada, primarily in urban areas.

Geography

Nestled along the Laccadive Sea, Kannur boasts an elevation of 1.02 meters (3.3 feet) and features a pristine sandy coastline. This coastal gem stretches for 8 kilometers, with the renowned 3-kilometer Payyambalam Beach gracing its shores. Positioned to the north of Kozhikode and to the south of Kasargod and Mangalore, Kannur is flanked by the Western Ghats of Kodagu and Wayanad to the west, while the azure Laccadive Sea borders it to the east. Ayikkara’s Mappila Bay harbor adds to its maritime charm, with the historic St. Angelo Fort and the regal Arakkal Palace adorning its shores. Administration

Kannur municipality came into existence on November 1, 1866, under the Madras Act 10 of 1865 (Amendment of the Improvements in Towns Act 1850), during the era of the British Indian Empire. This historic event also marked the formation of the initial modern municipalities in Kerala, including Thalassery, Kozhikode, Palakkad, and Fort Kochi. These municipalities played a pivotal role in shaping the state’s urban landscape. Notably, Kannur municipality attained the status of a Municipal Corporation in 2015, marking a significant milestone in its administrative journey and reflecting its growth and development over the years.
