History:

Chhatarpur, located in Madhya Pradesh, India, has a history rich with cultural and political significance. Founded in 1785 by Chhatrasal, a Bundela Rajput leader, the district is named after him. Chhatrasal’s legacy is a significant part of Chhatarpur’s history, as he was known for his valor and establishing his kingdom in this region.

During Chhatrasal’s reign, the area flourished, but after his death, it faced political instability. In the early 19th century, Chhatarpur became embroiled in the regional conflicts involving various Indian princely states and the British East India Company. The district witnessed several power struggles among local rulers and external forces.

In 1812, Chhatarpur came under British influence. The British East India Company took advantage of the internal disputes and established control over the region. This period marked significant changes in administration and the socio-economic structure of Chhatarpur.

Post-independence in 1947, Chhatarpur became a part of the newly formed Indian state. It was integrated into Madhya Pradesh, which was created in 1956 from the merger of several princely states.

Geography:

Chhatarpur district is situated between the coordinates of 24.06° to 25.20° North latitude and 78.59° to 80.26° East longitude. Covering an area of 8,687 square kilometers, it is located in Madhya Pradesh, India. The district shares its northern border with the state of Uttar Pradesh, while it is surrounded by Panna district to the east, Damoh to the south, Sagar to the southwest, and Tikamgarh to the west within Madhya Pradesh. Chhatarpur is also a part of the Sagar Division.

Demographics:

The 2011 census recorded Chhatarpur District’s population at 1,762,375, placing it at the 271st position among India’s 707 districts. It has a population density of 203 people per square kilometer. In terms of gender ratio, there are 884 females for every 1,000 males, and the literacy rate stands at 64.9%. Approximately 22.64% of the district’s population resides in urban areas.

During the 2011 Census of India, it was found that 74.45% of the district’s inhabitants primarily spoke Bundeli, while 24.69% spoke Hindi as their first language.
