Gondia district, also known as Gondiya, is an administrative district situated in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The district’s administrative center is Gondia city. Covering an expansive area of 5,234 square kilometers (2,021 square miles), it is home to a population of 1,322,507 people, with approximately 11.95% residing in urban areas as of the 2011 census. Gondia district is a part of the Nagpur Division and comprises 8 Talukas. Notably, Gondia Airport is the second airport in the Vidarbha region, serving the city of Gondia and contributing to the region’s connectivity

History

The Gondia region derives its name from the indigenous Gondi people, who are part of the Adivasi community in central India. During the British colonial era, Gondia was under the administration of the Ponwar Rajpoots. This period also witnessed significant infrastructure development, notably the construction of the Nagpur Chhattisgarh Railway, spanning 150 kilometers (93 miles), which connected Nagpur to Rajnandgaon. The Gondia railway station came into existence in December 1888 with the operation of this railway line. The Bengal Nagpur Railway (BNR) was established in 1887 to enhance and expand this rail network, including extensions to Jabalpur, as well as branches connecting Nainpur to Mandla, Seoni, and Chhindwara. These vital rail links facilitated commerce and contributed to the growth and prosperity of Gondia.

According to the 2011 census, Gondia district boasts a population of 1,322,507, which is approximately equivalent to the nation of Mauritius or the US state of New Hampshire. This positions it at the 369th rank among all districts in India, out of a total of 640. With a population density of 253 individuals per square kilometer (660/sq mi), the district experienced a growth rate of 10.13% between 2001 and 2011. Gondiya exhibits a sex ratio of 996 females for every 1,000 males, and an impressive literacy rate of 85.41%. Additionally, 17.08% of the population resides in urban areas.

Geography

Gondia witnesses remarkable temperature fluctuations, characterized by scorching hot summers and bone-chilling winters. The district maintains an average relative humidity of 62 percent, adding a subtle mugginess to its climate. Each monsoon season, spanning from June to September, brings substantial rainfall, recording an annual average of over 1,200 mm (47 inches). Presently, Gondia stands as one of the twelve districts in Maharashtra that benefits from financial support through the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF). This initiative is aimed at addressing and mitigating developmental challenges, bolstering the region’s progress, and enhancing the quality of life for its residents. Gondia’s inclusion in this program underscores its commitment to fostering equitable growth and development in the district.
