Lohardaga, situated west of Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, serves as the town and administrative center of Lohardaga district. In the early 1900s, it functioned as the commissionary headquarters for Chotanagpur before being relocated to Ranchi later. Presently, the commissioner’s office persists as the site for the Lohardaga Municipality office, preserving its historical significance. This town holds a historical legacy, having played a pivotal role in the administrative framework of Chotanagpur, witnessing shifts in regional governance over time.

History

Lohardaga, located in the state of Jharkhand, India, has a rich and vibrant history. The region was historically a part of the Chhotanagpur princely state and played a significant role in the tribal uprisings against the British. Lohardaga is known for its association with Birsa Munda, a freedom fighter and tribal leader who led several movements against British colonization. It was in Lohardaga that Birsa Munda organized the first ever tribal conference in 1894, demanding the rights and autonomy of the indigenous people. After India gained independence, Lohardaga became a district and witnessed socio-economic development. Today, it stands as a reminder of the courage and resilience of the tribal communities and their struggle for self-determination.

According to the 2011 India census,Lohardaga’s population stood at 57,411, with males comprising 52% and females 48%. The district boasts an impressive average literacy rate of 85.37%, surpassing the national average of 59.5%. Male literacy stands at 89.80%, while female literacy reaches 80.75%. Notably, 15% of Lohardaga’s population is under the age of 6, reflecting a youthful demographic within the district.

Geography

Lohardaga resides at coordinates 23.43°N 84.68°E, boasting an average elevation of 647 metres (2122 feet).Distinguished by small hill blocks draped in lush forests, the district’s topography slopes from west to east. Positioned adjacent are Latehar to the north, Ranchi to the east, and Gumla to the south-west. The district exhibits two primary physiographic divisions: a hilly tract dominating the western and north-western regions, featuring elevated hill peaks known as ‘pat,’ and a plateau section, part of the Gumla Plateau within the Chota Nagpur Plateau. Notably, Lohardaga and Bhandra CD blocks entirely occupy the plateau, while Kisko, Senha, and Kuru CD blocks span both the plateau and hilly tracts.
