About Jalna District
Jalna, nestled in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad Division, epitomizes historical significance within the Jalna district. Formerly a tehsil of Aurangabad district in Hyderabad State, it gained autonomous status on May 1, 1981, becoming Jalna district. History
Jalna, once known as Jalnapur, mirrors history akin to Aurangabad’s Khirki. Pre-Mughal conquests saw the Nizam Shahs of Ahmadnagar ruling Jalna. Under their governance, Jamshid Khan erected the Kali Masjid, a travelers’ sara’i, and a reservoir around 1557. Mughal ascension during Akbar’s reign marked Jalna’s shift, witnessing advancements during Aurangzeb and Nizam al-Mulk’s rule, enhancing civic and military infrastructure. The imposing Jalna Fort or Mastgad emerged in 1725 as a response to Maratha incursions. This historical tapestry showcases Jalna’s evolution, blending architectural marvels and strategic constructions, highlighting its rich past influenced by diverse dynasties.
Demography
As per the 2011 census, Jalna housed a population of 285,577, comprising 147,029 males and 138,485 females, indicating a sex ratio of 942 females per 1000 males. Economy
In 1863, Mr. Pestonji Meherwanji established the inaugural cotton-ginning & oil-pressing factory. Jalna grapples with challenges such as electricity, water scarcity, and road infrastructure deficiencies. By 1889, Aurangabad witnessed a cotton-spinning and weaving mill, employing 700 individuals. The Hyderabad–Godavari Valley Railways’ launch in 1900 spurred the establishment of numerous ginning factories. Jalna housed 9 cotton-ginning plants, 5 presses, while Aurangabad and Kannad had 2 ginning factories each, and Aurangabad possessed an oil press. Approximately 1,016 individuals worked in these establishments by 1901. Renowned as Maharashtra’s foremost sweet lemons and oranges producer, Jalna also excels in steel production, hosting numerous steel companies within the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) precinct.
