Assam is an Indian state that includes the administrative district of Nalbari. Nalbari is home to the district office. The district’s name comes from combining the terms “Nal” and “Bar.” It borders the districts of Baksa, Kamrup, and Barpeta and is located in the lowest part of the Brahmaputra Valley.

History

In 1967, Nalbari was established as a subdivision within the Kamrup District. After splitting from the Kamrup district on August 14, 1985, the district was established. On June 1, 2004, portions of three districts, including Nalbari, came together to form Baksa District. Nalbari has long been one of Assam’s major cultural centres. Its cultural and social structure has been shaped by the numerous historical events and shifts that it has experienced. The rich Assamese culture of the area is reflected in the traditional festivals and rituals that are well-known in the area.

Geography

The Nalbari district covers 2,257 square kilometres (871 sq mi). Its latitude is between 26 and 27 degrees north, while its longitude is between 91 and 97 degrees east. The wild tributaries of the Brahmaputra, the Nona, Buradia, Pagaldia, Ghogra, Borolia, and Tihu, have their source in the Himalayan foothills and play a significant role in the district’s agrarian economy.

Economy

Assam’s economically backward districts include the District of Nalbari, which is distinguished by low per capita income, a poor socioeconomic infrastructure centred on agriculture, a high proportion of rural residents living below the poverty line, and inadequate industrialisation. The most important sector of Nalbari’s economy is agriculture. In the district, around 97% of people reside in rural areas. The 2001 census report states that more than 71% of working-age people are employed in agriculture and related fields.

Demography

Nalbari district is ranked 488th in India out of 640 districts, with a population of 771,639, according to the 2011 census. The population density of the district is 763 people per square kilometre, or 1,980 people per square mile. Between 2001 and 2011, the population growth rate was 11.74%. In Nalbari, there are 945 females for every 1000 males and a 79.89% literacy rate. The population’s urban density is 10.72%. 3.03 percent of people belonged to Scheduled Tribes, while 7.80% of people belonged to Scheduled Castes.
