About Imphal East

Imphal, situated in Manipur, is Northeast India’s second-largest city. The metropolitan core hosts the historic Kangla Palace, encircled by a moat, once the royal seat of the Kingdom of Manipur. It spans Imphal West and Imphal East districts, with the former housing most of the city’s area and population. Imphal is a Smart City initiative participant, renowned for its thriving weaving, brass-ware, bronze-ware, and cottage industries. The Meitei language dominates. INS Imphal, a Visakhapatnam-class stealth guided missile destroyer of the Indian Navy, honors World War II Battle of Imphal heroes and is the first INS named after a Northeast Indian city, as per Encyclopedia Britannica’s unique listing.

History

Initially ruled by King Khaba, Imphal came under the governance of the Pakhangba leaders, giving rise to the Ningthouja tribe. This tribe swiftly expanded its influence in politics and warfare, culminating in the construction of Kangla Palace by King Khagemba and his son Khunjaoba. Unfortunately, this palace met its demise during the Anglo-Manipur War when the British ravaged it. Maharaja Bhagyachandra’s reign faced Burmese invasions, with Maharaj Gambhir Singh aiding in the kingdom’s survival. However, internal conflicts within the royal family in 1891 led to British intervention, resulting in Senapati Tikendrajit’s execution. British autocracy fueled public resentment, sparking the 1891 Anglo-Manipur War, ultimately won by the British.
