Lunglei served as the capital of the South Lushai Hill Districts for a decade starting in 1888, while Aizawl held the same status for the North Hill Districts. These two administrative divisions were amalgamated in 1898. Historically, Lunglei held significant importance as the second-largest town in Mizoram. Prior to the partition of India, it played a pivotal role as a key commercial and educational hub. Its strategic location provided direct access to Chittagong, a major city in Bangladesh, further elevating Lunglei’s status as a vital center for trade and education in the region.
