Located on India’s eastern coast, the district of Jagatsinghpur is one of Odisha’s thirty districts. After being split off from the Cuttack district, it became a standalone district on April 1, 1993. Hariharapur was its previous name. The district headquarters is at the town of Jagatsinghpur. The district is one of the more developed districts in Odisha, with a literacy rate of 68.5% for women and 88.5% for men, which is higher than the national average. In Odisha, the district ranks first for male literacy and second for female literacy.

Due to its location on the Odisha Coastal Plain, Jagatsinghpur shares a lot of historical similarities with the rest of Coastal Odisha. The Mauryans ruled it for a brief while; the area has several Mauryan-era coins. Later on, it became a part of Kharavela’s Chedi empire. There is no proof that the subsequent Guptas had direct control over Jagatsinghpur, despite Samudragupta’s considerable conquest of the region. Nonetheless, there is documentation of Gupta assistance to Buddhist monasteries in the area. Jagatsinghpur’s history is a synthesis of Maratha, Hindu, Muslim, and British domains. In 1600, the East India Company set up their arsenals in Hariharpur.

Geography

The elevation of Jagatsinghpur is fifteen meters. With a landmass of 1759 square kilometer, it is the state’s smallest district. Its triangle geographic proximity to the Prachi Valley in the south and the Chitrotpala Valley in the north, as well as its surrounding districts of Kendrapara in the north, Cuttack in the west, Puri in the south, and the Bay of Bengal in the east, are the main reasons for its recognition. It has a climate that is moderate. Summer is hot and muggy, while winter is frigid. The mainland of Jagatsinghpur is irrigated by four of Odisha’s principal rivers.

Demography

The 2011 census placed the population of Jagatsinghpur district at 1,136,971, or about the same as the population of Rhode Island, the US state, or the nation of Cyprus. This places the district at number 410th in India. The district has a population density of 682 people per square kilometre, and its population growth rate from 2001 to 2011 was only 7.5%. The district has a sex ratio of 968 females for every 1000 males, and its average literacy rate is 86.59%, with 80.6 percent of women and 92.38 percent of men and 80.6 percent of women literate. The population of Jagatsinghpur lives in urban areas, and 10.20% of its members are Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, respectively, making up 21.83% and 0.69% of the population.

Culture

The Sarala Temple is another reason why Jagatsinghpur is referred to as the cultural center of Odisha. Sarala Das, a 15th-century poet and scholar of Odia literature, is best known for three Odia books: Vilanka Ramayana, Chandi Purana, and Mahabharata. She was born in Jagatsinghpur district’s Kanakavati Patana, also known as Kanakapura, one of the Sidhikshetras. As the founder of Odia literature, his creations have served as a reliable source of knowledge for ensuing centuries. There are theater companies in the district that continue the long-standing custom of performing in front of an audience.

Climate

This district is known for its hot summers, high humidity virtually all year round, and good annual rainfall. Its average annual rainfall is approximately 1514.6 mm, and its maximum and lowest temperatures are 38 °C and 12 °C, respectively. Approximately 80–83% of the district’s annual rainfall falls during the monsoon season, with an average of 72 rainy days. The southwest monsoon is mostly to blame for the district’s rainfall.
