About Katihar District
Katihar is a city in the eastern region of Bihar, a state in India. Serving as the main office for Katihar district, it stands as one of Bihar’s important cities. Additionally, it is a key stop on the railway line that connects Delhi and Guwahati.
History:
Katihar has a rich history as it belongs to the Mithila region. This area became important after it was settled by Indo-Aryan people, who formed the Mithila Kingdom, also known as the Kingdom of the Videhas.
In the late Vedic period, around 1100-500 BCE, the Kingdom of the Videhas emerged as a key political and cultural hub in South Asia, alongside regions like Kuru and Panchal. The rulers of this kingdom were known as Janakas. The Mithila Kingdom, part of this region, was later included in the Vajjika League, with its capital in Vaishali, also located in Mithila. Over time, the Chaudhary family, who were significant landowners in the area, came to dominate. They owned about 15,000 acres of land in Katihar district and 8,500 acres in Purnia district. Taj Ali Chaudhary founded the Chaudhary family, and his notable sons were Chaudhary Khuda Baksh, Chaudhary Qadir Baksh, Khan Bahadur Chaudhary Mohammad Baksh, and Elahi Baksh.
Geography:
Katihar has a mostly moderate climate, but during the monsoon season, it receives a lot of rain. This heavy rainfall sometimes causes floods in the rural areas around Katihar District.

The total population of Katihar Municipal Corporation was 225,982, with 119,142 males and 106,840 females, showing a sex ratio of 897. There were 31,036 children under the age of 5. The literacy rate for those aged 7 and above was 79.87%. In the list of India’s top 200 cities by population, based on the 2011 census, Katihar ranks 193rd.
