About Kishanganj

Kishanganj district is among the thirty-eight districts in Bihar, India, with its administrative center in Kishanganj town. It is also part of the Purnia division, known as Seemanchal.

History:

Kishanganj district, originally a part of Purnia district, belongs to the Mithila region. This region became significant when Indo-Aryan people settled there and formed the Mithila Kingdom, also known as the Kingdom of the Videhas. This kingdom was governed by the Videhas, a tribe of Indo-Aryan people.

In the late Vedic period, around 1100-500 BCE, the Kingdom of the Videhas emerged as a key political and cultural hub in South Asia, alongside regions like Kuru and Pañcāla. The rulers of this kingdom were known as Janakas. The Mithila Kingdom, part of this region, was later included in the Vajjika League, with its capital in Vaishali, also located in Mithila.

Kishanganj used to be a significant subdivision of Purnia district. After about seventeen years of persistent efforts by various people from Kishanganj, including social workers, politicians, journalists, businessmen, and farmers, it finally became its own district, separate from Purnia, on January 14, 1990.

Geography:

Kishanganj district covers an area of 1,884 square kilometers. It is bordered by Araria district to the west and Purnia district to the southwest. On the east, it is adjacent to Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal, while to the north, it shares borders with Darjeeling district of West Bengal and Nepal. Additionally, a thin strip of land about 20 km wide in West Bengal separates Kishanganj from Bangladesh.

The major rivers that flow through the district include the Mahananda, Kankai, Mechi, Donk, and Ratua.

Demographics:

Based on the 2011 census, Kishanganj district is home to 1,690,400 people, placing it 293rd among India’s 640 districts. The population density of the district is 898 people per square kilometer. In Kishanganj, there are 946 women for every 1,000 men, and 57.04% of its population can read and write. Additionally, 9.53% of the population resides in urban areas.

Most of the people in Kishanganj district live in villages. Kishanganj is unique in Bihar as it is the only district with a Muslim majority, making up about 68% of its population. There is also a significant Hindu community, with many being Surajpuris (Rajbanshi). Surajpuri is the language spoken by most residents in Kishanganj.

During the 2011 Census in India, it was found that in Kishanganj district, 42.61% of the people speak Surjapuri as their main language. Furthermore, 32.62% speak Urdu, 9.05% Hindi, 6.66% Bengali, 3.45% Santali, 2.63% Maithili, and 1.23% Bhojpuri as their first language.
