About Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer, known as “The Golden City,” rests in Rajasthan, India, 575 kilometers west of Jaipur. Once the capital of the Bhati Rajputs’ Jaisalmer State, it boasts the majestic Jaisalmer Fort atop a sandstone ridge. This ancient stronghold houses a royal palace and intricate Jain temples. The town’s dwellings and temples, within the fort and below, showcase finely sculpted sandstone craftsmanship. Embraced by the Thar Desert, Jaisalmer’s population, around 78,000, includes fort residents. It stands as a testament to history, a city adorned with ornate architecture and cultural heritage, inviting visitors to explore its golden-hued landscape and immerse themselves in its rich legacy.
History
Jaisalmer’s roots trace back to the Bhati dynasty’s remnants, once ruling a vast empire stretching from Ghazni to Sialkot, Lahore, Rawalpindi in Pakistan, and parts of India. Central Asian invasions led to the empire’s decline. An alliance between Hindu Shahis of Afghanistan and Bhati rulers aimed to halt Turkic raids but failed in 977 CE. Bhati territories shifted southward, ruling Multan before settling in Cholistan and founding Dera Rawal/Derawar. Rawal Jaisal established Jaisalmer in 1156, becoming its capital and naming the state after it. The dynasty’s saga embodies shifts, alliances, and resilience in the face of historical tumult.
