Supaul is a town and municipality serving as the headquarters of Supaul district in Bihar, India. It also functions as the administrative headquarters for this district. The Supaul district comprises 11 blocks: Supaul, Kishanpur, Saraigarh-Bhaptiyahi, Pipra, Triveniganj, Raghopur, Chhatapur, Nirmali, Marauna, Basantpur, and Pratapganj.

History:

Supaul, previously part of Saharsa district, now belongs to the Mithila region. Mithila’s historical significance dates back to the settlement of Indo-Aryan peoples who founded the Mithila Kingdom, also known as the Kingdom of the Videhas. During the late Vedic period (c. 1100–500 BCE), Videha emerged as a significant political and cultural hub in South Asia, alongside Kuru and Pañcāla. The rulers of the Videha Kingdom were known as Janakas. Eventually, the Videha Kingdom became part of the Vajjika League, which had its capital in Vaishali, another city within Mithila.

According to the 2011 India census, Supaul had a population of 2,228,397, with 1,157,815 males and 1,070,582 females. The initial provisional data indicate a density of 919 in 2011, compared to 714 in 2001.
