Birbhum Pincodes

In the Indian state of West Bengal, the district of Birbhum serves as an administrative division. This district is located in the northernmost part of Burdwan Division, which is one of West Bengal’s five administrative divisions. The district office is located at Suri. Sainthia, Rampurhat, and Bolpur are more significant cities. The district is bordered to the west by the districts of Bardhaman and Murshidabad in West Bengal; to the east are the districts of Jamtara, Dumka, and Pakur in the state of Jharkhand.

Geography

Positioned precisely between 23° 32′ 30″ and 24° 35′ 0″ north latitude and between 87° 5′ 25″ and 88° 1′ 40″ east longitudes, this triangular district spans approximately 4,545 square kilometers (1,755 sq mi). The triangle’s tip points north, while the River Ajay forms its southern base. The districts of Birbhum and Bardhaman are divided by the river. The state of Jharkhand borders Birbhum on the north and west, and Murshidabad borders it on the east.

Climate

The eastern side experiences somewhat gentler weather than the western side, which is arid and harsh. The temperature can reach far above 40 °C (104 °F) in the summer and as low as 6 °C (43 °F) in the winter. The western regions receive more rainfall than the eastern regions. Rajnagar receives 1,405 millimetres (55.3 in) of rainfall annually on average, whereas Nanoor receives 1,212 millimetres (47.7 in), primarily during the monsoon season (June to October).

History

Muslims dominated the area in the thirteenth century CE, although it seems that they had little influence over the western portions of the province; the real power was held by the Hindu lords in the area, known as the Bir Rajas (Bagdi Malla dynasty). Their relics are in the towns of Birsinghpur, Rajnagar, and Hetampur. From Dubrajpur, the Hetampur and Rajnagar Kingdoms (meaning two kingdoms: Hetampur & Rajnagar) ruled over much of Birbhum and portions of Burdwan, Maldah, and Jharkhand. Lakhnur is described as the thanah (headquarters) of the Rarh wing of Muslim control and a significant frontier post by Minhaj-i-Siraj, the author of the Tabaqat-i-Nasiri.

Economy

In Birbhum, agriculture is the main industry, employing around 75% of the district’s population. 3,329.05 sq km (1,285.35 sq mi) of land is used for agriculture, whilst 159.3 sq km (61.5 sq mi) of land is covered by forests. Ninety-two percent of people reside in villages. 63,374 are small farmers, holding 95,144 hectares overall; 26,236 are semi-medium farmers, holding 76,998 hectares overall; 1,290 are medium farmers, holding 6,215 hectares overall; and 9 are large farmers. Of the total 4,50,313 farmers, holding 3,20,610 hectares of land, 3,59,404 are marginal farmers, holding 1,41,813 hectares altogether.

Demography

Birbhum district has 3,502,404 residents, almost the same as the population of Lithuania or the US state of Connecticut, according to the 2011 census. As a result, it is ranked 84th in India. The population density of the district is 771 people per square kilometer, or 2,000 people per square mile. From 2001 to 2011, the population grew at a pace of 16.15%. Birbhum has a 70.9% literacy rate and a sex ratio of 956 females for every 1000 males. The percentage of people who reside in cities is 12.83%.

Culture

A noteworthy example of the district’s traditional culture are the songs, philosophies, and bauls of Birbhum. Kabiyals, Kirtaniyas, and other folk culture groups have called Birbhum home. Poush Mela in Santiniketan is the first of Birbhum’s many fairs, which continue through the Bengali month of Poush till Makar Sankranti. At Jaydev Kenduli, the fair is especially lively. There are events planned for every season. Birbhum residents enjoy traditional entertainment events including jatra, kavigan, and alkap.
