About Faizabad
Faizabad, pronounced as [fɛːzaːbaːd], is a historic city nestled in the Ayodhya district within the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Positioned on the southern banks of the River Saryu, it is located approximately 130 kilometers to the east of the state capital, Lucknow. Faizabad holds a significant historical legacy as it served as the inaugural capital for the Nawabs of Awadh, boasting awe-inspiring monuments like the Tomb of Bahu Begum and Gulab Bari, crafted during their reign. Until November 2018, it functioned as the administrative center for both Faizabad district (now Ayodhya district) and Faizabad division (now Ayodhya division). Faizabad is intricately linked to Ayodhya and is jointly governed by the Ayodhya Municipal Corporation.
History
As per historical records found in The Imperial Gazetteer of India, the city of Faizabad has a captivating origin story. In 1730, when Saadat Khan assumed the role of Oudh’s governor, he constructed a hunting lodge just 4 miles to the west of Ayodhya. This move triggered the growth of gardens and local shops in the vicinity. Subsequently, during the reign of his successor, Safdar Jang, the name “Faizabad” was officially bestowed upon this burgeoning settlement. Shuja-ud-daula, the third Nawab, initially resided in Lucknow but shifted to Faizabad following his defeat at Buxar in 1764. He not only made Faizabad his stronghold but also significantly bolstered its defenses and expanded the city.
Demography
In the 2011 Census of India, Faizabad was classified into two distinct areas: Faizabad Municipal Council (N.P.P.) and Faizabad Cantonment, each considered as separate towns for demographic purposes.
Faizabad Municipal Council (N.P.P.) boasted a population of 165,228 residing in 28,150 households. In contrast, Faizabad Cantonment was home to 12,391 individuals distributed across 2,014 households.
