Mahasamund is a city in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh’s Mahasamund District. Situated on the Raipur-Vishakhaptnam and Mumbai-Kolkata National Highways. It is one of the State’s biggest (ranked eleventh) and most significant cities. The largest city in the Trans-Mahanadi region, it is separated into five zones and thirty wards.

In addition, it serves as the Mahasamund District’s administrative centre and is a portion of the planned new Mahasamund Municipal Corporation. As of the now, Prakash Chandrakar is the mayor. Prominent shopping centres in the city include Reliance Trends, Vishal Megamart, Reliance Jio Smart Point, B Mart, and Zed Sale.

History

The District is well-known for its rich cultural past. The area was previously a seat of study and the capital of “South Kosal” which was ruled by “Somavansiya Emperors.” There are many temples here, and they are all quite beautiful both naturally and artificially. Temples and fairs/festivals are now commonplace sights in people’s daily lives. Sirpur is ranked highest among all internationally renowned historical sites in South Kosal, or modern-day Chhattisgarh. Situated on the banks of the sacred Mahanadi River, Sirpur is entirely immersed in the arts of culture and architecture.

Geography

The coordinates of Mahasamund are 21.1°N 82.1°E. Elevation on average is 318 metres (1043 feet). Mahasamund is located near the Mahanadi River at the intersection of National Highways 6 and 217, 56 km southeast of Raipur. Mahasamund City is a significant rail stop along the Raipur–Vizag line. The only district headquarters that are close to Naya Raipur, the state capital of Chhattisgarh, are Mahasamund and Raipur.

Demography

There are 112,228 people living in Mahasamund as of the 2011 Indian census. Of the total population, 49% are women and 51% are men. The average literacy rate in Mahasamund is 70%; the rate for men is 79% and the rate for women is 61%. The population under six is fourteen percent. In 2014, the population is expected to exceed one lakh.
