Banaskantha, one of Gujarat’s thirty-three districts, has its administrative hub in Palanpur, its largest city. Positioned in Gujarat’s northeast, it’s likely named after the West Banas River, flowing between Mount Abu and the Aravalli Range into the plains and towards the Rann of Kutch. The district is well-known for the Ambaji temple, attracting many visitors. Covering 12,703 km², Banaskantha is the state’s second-largest district.

Geography:

Banaskantha is bordered by Rajasthan to the north. To the east, it is adjacent to Sabarkantha district, while Kutch district lies to the west. In the south, it neighbors both Patan and Mehsana districts.

Economy:

Banaskantha boasts significant mineral reserves, including limestone, marble, granite, and china clay. It holds nearly all (99.3%) of Gujarat’s marble reserves and contributes about 15% to the state’s limestone production. Additionally, the Banaskantha District Central Co-operative Bank stands as one of Gujarat’s key financial institutions. Furthermore, The district of Sardarkrushinagar has Bajra as a main crop.

Demographics:

The 2011 census reports that Banaskantha district has a population of 3,120,506, ranking it 111th among India’s 640 districts. It has a population density of 290 people per square kilometer. The sex ratio in Banaskantha is 936 females for every 1000 males, with a literacy rate of 66.39%. As per the same census, 96.35% of the district’s population speaks Gujarati as their first language, while 0.91% speak Hindi.
