Bharuch Pincodes

Bharuch, once known as Broach, is a district in southern Gujarat. The name Bharuch comes from the Hindu sage Bhrigu, and it was historically called ‘Bhrigukachchha’.

History:

The city of Bharuch and its surrounding district have a long history, dating back to ancient times, and were significant in early maritime trade. This region was a major shipbuilding center and seaport on the pre-compass coastal trading routes to the West, possibly as old as the Pharaohs’ era. It was a key hub for the famed Spice and Silk trade from the Far East, capitalizing on the predictable Monsoon winds for shipping. Bharuch was well-known to the Greeks, various Persian Empires, the Roman Republic and Empire, and continued to be significant in the Western world until the European Middle Ages.

Divisions:

Administratively, the district includes the subdistricts (talukas) of Bharuch, Ankleshwar, Hansot, Jambusar, Jhagadia, Amod, and Vagra, as well as the city of Bharuch itself.

Demographics:

The 2011 census reports that Bharuch district has a population of 1,551,019, ranking it 321st in India among 640 districts. It has a population density of 238 people per square kilometer. In Bharuch, there are 924 females for every 1000 males, and the literacy rate is 83.03%. Additionally, 33.85% of its population resides in urban areas. According to the same census, 90.02% of the district’s residents speak Gujarati as their first language, followed by 6.30% speaking Hindi, 1.13% Marathi, and 0.57% Urdu.
