Ambattur got its name from a settlement of the same name that is now situated across from the Ambattur phone exchange. Ambattur was a community with vast tracts of arable land that the once-sprawling Ambattur Lake provided irrigation for.

History

Ambattur, along with Avadi, Sembium, Ennore, and Tiruvottriyur, is a section of the “auto belt” in the industrial north and west of the city, which emerged in the early post-World War II years of Madras when the automobile industry began to flourish. The TI factory and TII complex were established in the United Kingdom thanks in large part to Sir Ivan Stedeford, chairman of Tube Investments. A. M. Murugappa Chettiar of the Murugappa Group, a tiny company that produced sandpaper and abrasives for the war effort and traded war excess, and Sir Ivan signed a joint venture agreement.
