History

In Sikh tradition, Guru Ram Das founded Amritsar. Legends diverge on the land’s origin: purchased for 700 rupees or chosen by Guru Amar Das as ‘Guru Da Chakk.’ Facing opposition, Ram Das established the town, named ‘Ramdaspur.’ He built a central pool and his Guru center. Inviting settlers, the town expanded under Guru Arjan Dev, evolving into Amritsar. Amar Das’s son erected the gurdwara Harmandir Sahib, enhancing the temple complex around the pool.
