About Ashoknagar
Ashoknagar, also known as Ashok Nagar, is a city in central India, serving as the administrative center of its namesake district in Madhya Pradesh. Initially a part of Guna district, this city is recognized for its Grain Mandi and the unique “Sharbati Gaihu” wheat. Located 45 km from Guna, Ashoknagar was previously called Pachar. The city is divided by a railway line and features a railway station and two bus stations, ensuring connectivity to major cities in Madhya Pradesh by both road and rail.
Geographically, Ashoknagar lies in the northern part of Madhya Pradesh, nestled between the Sindh and Betwa rivers. While largely situated in the Bundelkhand Plateau, it also extends into the northern Malwa plateau. The Betwa River forms its eastern boundary, separating it from Sagar District in Madhya Pradesh and Lalitpur District in Uttar Pradesh, while the Sindh River flows along its western edge. Chanderi, a notable area within Ashoknagar, is renowned for its handwoven Chanderi sarees and other traditional textiles.
The district is strategically located on the Kota-Bina section of the Western Central Railway. It shares its eastern boundary with Uttar Pradesh, being about 87 km from Lalitpur and is roughly 190 km from Bhopal, 360 km from Indore, 153 km from Jhansi, and 250 km from Gwalior.
History:
The history of Ashoknagar dates back to ancient times, with many early historians believing that the town was once part of the Chedi Kingdom, which also included Chanderi, during the era of the Mahabharata.
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Ashoknagar was part of the Ishagarh District under the rule of the Scindhiyas of Gwalior. By the late 20th century, the town was known as Pachhar. The name was later changed to Ashoknagar by the Madhya Pradesh government. Initially, Ashoknagar was a town within the Guna district, but in 2003, it gained the status of a separate district.
Geography:
Ashoknagar sits at an average height of 507 meters (1640 feet) above sea level, located on a plateau in a predominantly agricultural area. This plateau is part of the Deccan Traps, a geological structure formed between 60 and 68 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous period. The region is characterized by three main soil types: black, brown, and bhatori (stony soil). The black soil, formed from basalt and rich in iron, is known for its moisture retention, reducing the need for frequent irrigation. The other soil types are lighter, containing more sand.
The local climate is divided into three distinct seasons: summer, monsoon, and winter. Summer, from mid-March to mid-May, sees average temperatures around 35 °C, occasionally peaking at 46 °C. The monsoon season begins in mid-June and lasts until September, with most rainfall occurring during the southwest monsoon. Rainfall varies across the region, with Ashoknagar receiving an average of 140 cm annually. The growing season, when temperatures typically stay below 30 °C, lasts between 90 to 150 days.
Winter, lasting about five months from October to mid-March, is the longest season. Daily temperatures range from 15 °C to 20 °C, dropping to as low as 5 °C on some nights. Local farmers appreciate the occasional winter showers, known as Mawta, which they believe benefit the early summer wheat and germ crops.
