Bidar district is located in the northern part of Karnataka, India, with Bidar city as its administrative headquarters. It’s like the “Crown of the State” and is bordered by Telangana’s Kamareddy and Sangareddy districts to the east, Maharashtra’s Latur and Osmanabad districts to the west, Maharashtra’s Nanded district to the north, and Kalaburagi district to the south. The district consists of eight talukas, including Bidar, Humnabad, Bhalki, Aurad, Hulsoor, Chitgoppa, Kamalnagar, and Basavakalyan, with Bidar as its main center. Bidar is well-connected through NH-9 and NH-218 highways.

History:

Bidar district, known as “Viduranagara” in traditional tales, has a rich history with rulers like Mauryas, Rashtrakutas, Mughals, and Nizams. The 12th-century Shivasharanas’ revolution influenced culture and religion. It’s a diverse district with more Hindus and Muslims, and reformers like Basaveshwara and Guru Nanak contributed to social equality. The Rashtrakutas once had their capital in Bidar district at Mayurkhandi, later moving to Manyakheta. Kalyani, now called Basavakalyan, was the capital for Western Chalukyas, while the Kalachuris kept Kalyani as theirs. Bidar was ruled by different powers like the Sevuna Yadavas, Kakatiyas, Alauddin Khalji, and Muhammad bin Tughluq. The Bahmani Sultanate was established with Bidar as its capital in 1425. It later became the center of the Barid Shahis. In 1619, the Bidar Sultanate merged with the Bijapur Sultanate. After Aurangzeb’s rule, the Nizam-ul-mulk gained control, and Bidar became part of Karnataka after Independence.

Geography: 

The district is in northern Karnataka and has a wide, flat plateau landscape with no mountains. The rocks are old and are covered by a layer of Deccan Traps, which are flat and weather in a unique way. The soil here is dark and fertile, making it good for growing crops like pulses.

The district can be split into two parts: the lowlands in the north and the highlands in the south. The southern highlands, also called the Bidar plateau, are made of laterite rock. The land here varies in height from 420 to 684 meters above sea level. The Bidar plateau is between 640 to 684 meters above sea level and is flat with gently sloping valleys and flat-topped hills. These hills have steps-like sides, creating a terraced look. The southern part of the district is a high plateau about 715 meters above sea level and has good drainage.

Demographics:

In 2011, Bidar district had about 1,703,300 people, ranking it 287th in India out of 640 districts. It makes up 2.84% of Karnataka’s total area and is home to 2.78% of the state’s population. The district has 312 people living in every square kilometer. There are 952 females for every 1000 males, and about 71.01% of the people can read and write. About 25.01% of the population lives in cities or towns. In 2011, about 52.97% of the people in Bidar district spoke Kannada as their main language. Marathi was spoken by 18.41%, Urdu by 17.16%, Telugu by 4.25%, Lambadi by 3.60%, and Hindi by 3.14% of the population as their first language. Kannada is officially the spoken language. Marathi is used in villages near Maharashtra. Urdu and Hindi are mainly spoken in cities. Telugu is spoken by those near Telangana, and Lambadi is the language of the Banjara people.
