History

Before the mid-15th century, the terrain that now encompasses Bikaner was an unforgiving expanse known as Jangladesh. In 1488, Rao Bika, the eldest son of Maharaja Rao Jodha from the Rathore clan, the founder of Jodhpur, embarked on an ambitious endeavor. He conquered the arid northern region of Rajasthan and, driven by a desire to establish his distinct realm rather than inherit Jodhpur or its royal title, he laid the foundation for the city of Bikaner. This marked the birth of Bikaner in what is today the state of Bikaner, transforming the erstwhile desolation into a thriving kingdom under his rule.

Demography

According to the 2011 Census of India, Bikaner city boasted a population of 644,406 residents, ranking it among the top 70 major cities in India and securing the 5th position in Rajasthan. The city exhibited a gender ratio of 904 females for every 1,000 males, reflecting a diverse demographic composition. Impressively, Bikaner demonstrated a commendable literacy rate of approximately 79%, with males attaining a higher literacy rate of 87% compared to females at 71%. Geography

Bikaner district is geographically defined by its neighboring regions. To the north lies Ganganagar district, while the northeast is bordered by Hanumangarh district. Moving eastward, it shares boundaries with Churu district, and to the southeast, it is adjacent to Nagaur district. Heading south, Jodhpur district marks the border, while the southwest is demarcated by Jaisalmer district. The northwestern boundary of Bikaner district touches the Punjab Province of Pakistan, completing its geographical contours. This strategic positioning of Bikaner district underscores its role as a pivotal crossroads in the state of Rajasthan, connecting it with neighboring regions and international borders.

Administrative

Bikaner district is administratively divided into eight sub-divisions, referred to as tehsils, which include Bikaner, Nokha, Loonkaransar, Shri Dungargarh, Kolayat, and Pugal. Additionally, there are two sub-tehsils: Bajju, situated within Kolayat, and Mahajan, located in Loonkaransar. The district encompasses a total of 1,498 villages and is organized into 290 gram panchayats. Its governance structure comprises a municipal corporation, Bikaner, along with six municipal councils in Deshnok, Nokha, Dungargarh, Khajuwala, Loonkaransar, and Napasar. At the helm of administration, Nimit Mehta serves as the collector and district magistrate (DM) of Bikaner, with Sunita Chaudhary holding the position of additional magistrate.
