About Bokaro District

Bokaro district is one of the most industrialized districts in India and represents the height of industrialization in the country. Representing one of the state of Jharkhand’s twenty-four districts, it is a constituency. It was formed in 1991 by separating a subdivision from Dhanbad district that consisted of two blocks and combining six blocks from Giridih district. A concentrated center for industrial growth and development was made possible by this strategic progress. When it was first established, the district of Bokaro was a booming hub that showed development and economic life in the area and left its mark on India’s industrial environment.
 

History

Bokaro is a district located in the state of Jharkhand with a rich and diverse history. The area first gained prominence under the reign of the Mauryan Empire, around 3rd century BCE. Later, it was ruled by various dynasties, including the Gupta Empire and the Mughals. In modern times, Bokaro district saw significant development with the establishment of the Bokaro Steel Plant in the early 1960s, which brought tremendous industrial growth to the area.Today, Bokaro is a major industrial hub and known for its progressive attitudes towards education and innovations. The district has a diverse population, with a mix of various cultures, religions, and traditions.

Demography

As per the 2011 census, Bokaro district hosts a population of 2,062,330, securing the 222nd spot among India’s 640 districts. The area boasts a population density of 716 individuals per square kilometer. Over the decade from 2001 to 2011, the population witnessed a growth rate of 15.99%. The district reflects a sex ratio of 916 females per 1000 males, alongside a literacy rate of 72.01%. Urban areas accommodate 47.70% of the populace. Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes account for 14.51% and 12.40% respectively. The linguistic landscape shows Khortha as the primary language for 46.23% of the population, followed by Hindi (13.61%), Bengali (10.67%), and others in varying percentages.

Geography

Bokaro district sprawls across the undulating Chota Nagpur Plateau, sliced by the Damodar River. Elevations range from 200 to 540 metres (660 to 1,770 ft) above sea level, the pinnacle being Lugu Pahar at 1,070 metres (3,510 ft). It boasts rich coal reserves from the East Bokaro and Jharia Coalfields, housing the monumental Bokaro Steel Plant, a cornerstone of Indian steel manufacturing. The Damodar Valley Corporation’s thermal power station and the Tenughat Dam, a 5-kilometre (3.1 mi) earthfill dam, amplify its significance. With an annual rainfall of 1,291.2 millimetres (50.83 in) and predominantly rain-fed agriculture due to infertile soil, Bokaro thrives on industrial prowess.

Economy
