About Bundi

Bundi, situated in western India’s Rajasthan state, serves as both a district and its administrative center. Encompassing an expansive area of 5,550 square kilometers, it is home to a population of 1,110,906 residents according to the 2011 census. The district is further divided into five tehsils, namely Bundi, Hindoli, Nainwa, Keshoraipatan, and Indergarh, each contributing to the rich cultural and geographical diversity of this historic region.

History

Stone Age tools dating back 5,000 to 200,000 years were unearthed in Rajasthan’s Bundi and Bhilwara districts. The southeastern part of Rajasthan, known as Hadoti, is renowned as the homeland of the Hada Rajputs, a prominent branch of the Chauhan Agnikula Rajputs. In the 12th century CE, the Hadas settled in the hilly Mewar region, specifically at Bambaoda near Bijoliya. The town of Bundi was established in 1241 CE by Rao Deva Singh, marking the first step in the creation of Hadauti as the Hadas migrated from the rocky Bambaoda region. The name “Bundi” is derived from the narrow passage, called the Bando Naal, nestled amidst the rugged hills.

Demography

As of the 2011 census, Bundi district boasted a population of 1,110,906, which is approximately equivalent to the population of Cyprus or the U.S. state of Rhode Island. This positions the district at the 415th rank among all districts in India, out of a total of 640. Notably, the district exhibits a population density of 193 individuals per square kilometer (500 per square mile).

Geography

Situated in the southeastern part of Rajasthan, Bundi district lies within the Hadoti region, sharing borders with neighboring districts. To the north, it adjoins Tonk district, while its western boundary meets Bhilwara district. In the southwest, Chittorgarh district is its neighbor, and to the east lies Kota district. The southeastern boundary is defined by the meandering course of the Chambal River, effectively separating Bundi and Kota districts, thus demarcating the district’s geographical extent.

Administrative

Bundi district’s present boundaries closely mirror those of the princely state when it became part of India in 1948. Nevertheless, a significant alteration occurred in 1949 when the Rajasthan Union underwent reconfiguration, evolving into Greater Rajasthan. During this transition, 30 villages were reassigned from Bundi to Tonk, reshaping the district’s limits. Conversely, seven villages from Thikana Antarda were transferred from Kota to Bundi, further modifying the district’s jurisdiction. These adjustments in territorial demarcation, albeit minor in scale, reflected the dynamic administrative changes occurring during the integration of princely states into the newly formed state of Rajasthan.
