History

Champhai, historically significant as the headquarters of Lalbura Sailo, son of Mizo Chief Vanhnuailiana, was a focal point during the British Expedition of 1871–72. It held the distinction of a fort during the British era. The Champhai Valley, once a lake, underwent gradual silting over time. During the Lushai Expedition of 1872, the plain’s soil remained uncultivated. It wasn’t until 1898, under British Colonial Authorities’ encouragement, that irrigated rice cultivation commenced in Champhai to provide rice for their troops and laborers. Remarkably, by 1922, the town had a lone shop, marking its humble beginnings in contrast to its present development.

In 1991, Champhai district welcomed the establishment of Murlen National Park, covering an expansive area of 200 square kilometers (77.2 square miles). Additionally, the district is proud to host the Lengteng Wildlife Sanctuary, which was officially designated in 1999 and encompasses an area spanning 120 square kilometers (46.3 square miles).
