Chandel district, situated in the northeastern state of Manipur, India, is one of the 16 administrative divisions in the region. The district’s central hub is the town of Chandel, serving as its headquarters. In December 2016, a segment of the district was carved out to form the new Tengnoupal district, redefining administrative boundaries. Linguistically, the predominant language in Chandel is Anāl, a member of the Naga language family. As of the 2011 census, Chandel ranked as the second least populous district in Manipur, with a population density of 40 individuals per square kilometer. History
The Chandel district underwent significant administrative changes over the years. Initially established as “Tengnoupal district” in 1974, it later saw a name alteration in 1983 to “Chandel district” because its administrative hub had shifted to Chandel town. Furthermore, in December 2016, a new administrative division emerged, leading to the creation of the current-day Tengnoupal district, which was separated from the original Chandel district.
