History

Chatra district is situated in the eastern region of Jharkhand state of India. Historically, the region was a part of the Kalinga Empire and ruled by various dynasties including the Gupta Empire and Maurya Dynasty. Later, Chatra became a part of the Mughal Empire and saw significant growth under the British Raj, especially in the 18th and 19th centuries. After India gained independence, Jharkhand became a state in 2000, and Chatra became a separate district within the state. Today, Chatra is predominantly an agricultural region with a mix of tribal and non-tribal populations. The district is known for its scenic beauty, ancient temples, and rich cultural heritage.

As per the 2011 census, Chatra district houses a population of 1,042,886, akin to Cyprus or Rhode Island. Ranked 434th in India, it boasts a population density of 280 per sq km. Experiencing a growth rate of 28.98% from 2001-2011, it holds a sex ratio of 951 females per 1000 males and a 60.18% literacy rate. Urban dwellers make up 6.04% of the populace. Scheduled Castes and Tribes represent 32.65% and 4.37% respectively. Hindus constitute 86.6%, Muslims 11.19%, with Christianity and other religions comprising 0.63% and 1.58%. Dominant languages include Khortha (39.71%), Hindi (39.21%), Magahi (12.47%), Urdu (5.47%), and Kurukh (1.72%).

Situated at 24°12′16″N 84°52′37″E, Chatra boasts enchanting waterfalls in its vicinity: Goa Falls (6 km), Keridah Falls (8 km), Maludah Falls (8 km), and Bichkiliya (11 km). A hot spring at Balbal Duari (25 km) adds to its allure. The district spans a plateau at around 450 meters (1,476 ft) above sea level, with lush forests blanketing 60% of its expanse. Notably, efforts are underway to inaugurate NTPC Limited’s North Karanpura Thermal Power Station’s initial unit by 2021. Chatra is part of the expansive North Karanpura Coalfield of Central Coalfields Limited, encompassing 1,230 square kilometers (470 sq mi) and harboring colossal coal reserves of 14 billion tonnes, making it a significant coalfield in India.

In 2006, Chatra was recognized by the Indian government among the nation’s 250 most underprivileged districts out of 640. As part of Jharkhand, it stands as one of the 21 districts benefiting from financial support through the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF).
