About Chengalpattu
Chengalpattu, formerly called Chingleput, is a city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu that serves as the district headquarters. The town is close to the IT and industrial center. Situated on National Highway 45, the district headquarters are 56 kilometers from Chennai, the state capital. It is a significant hub for commerce. Along with other colleges connected to the University of Madras, it boasts a medical college.
History
Chengalpattu originated in the early Chola period of the second millennium BCE. After the Vijayanagara rulers were vanquished by the Deccan sultanates in the Battle of Talikota in 1565, their former capital was Chengalpattu. Because of its lake on one side and its surrounding swamps, the Vijayanagara rulers’ 16th-century castle at Chengalpattu held strategic importance. The British East India Company received a parcel of coastal property, where Fort St. George currently stands, from a local ruler, or nayak, who was subordinate to these kings in 1639. This territory became the foundation of the city of Madras.

Demography
Chengalpattu had a population of 210306 as per the census taken in 2021, and its sex ratio of 1,020 females for every 1,000 males was much higher than the national average of 929. There were 5,884 children under the age of six in all—2,839 girls and 3,045 boys. 15.55% of the population belonged to Scheduled Castes, and 1.44% to Scheduled Tribes. The town’s average literacy rate was 83.25%, while the national average stood at 72.99%. In all, there were 15675 households in the town.
Economy
Because of Chengalpattu’s close proximity to Chennai and regular rail and road connections, the town is home to a number of contemporary enterprises. Production facilities for a number of businesses are located close to Chengalpattu, including Al-Ohm Inc., Tech Mahindra, Wipro, BMW, Ford, Flextronics, Foxconn, Dell, Samsung, Infosys, Pepsi, TVS, Siemens, Nissan Renault, RLT Instrumentation, Apollo Tyres, Mahindra, Medopharm Pvt Ltd, R & D, and Bay Forge. Industries housed in the Marg Swarnabhoomi SEZ at Kodur include Zwilling J. A. Henckels and DHL. The Ministry of Industry declared in September 2021 that a SIDCO industrial park would be developed near Kodur Village, creating jobs for more than two thousand people.
Tourism
These days, Chengalpattu has grown in popularity as a tourist destination for many foreign visitors traveling to Kanchipuram, the Karikili Bird Sanctuary, and Mamallapuram, Thirukazhukundram, Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary. On weekends, people gather with their families to unwind at the boat house that the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) built on the Kolavai Lake, which is next to the NH 45 expressway.
The TTDC boat club’s operations were discontinued in December 2005 as a result of the monsoon rains flooding the lake’s gates. Additionally, it acts as a bridge that links all neighboring districts to popular tourist destinations including Kanchipuram, Mahabalipuram, Muttukadu, theme parks along the East Coast Road (ECR), and Thirukazhukundram.
