About Cooch Behar

In the Indian state of West Bengal, Cooch Behar, sometimes known as Koch Bihar, is a city and municipality located on the bank of the River Torsa. It serves as the district’s headquarters for Cooch Behar. It is located at 26°22′N 89°29′E, in the Eastern Himalayan foothills. The city of Cooch Behar is planned. History

The Bhutanese monarch invaded and conquered Cooch Behar between 1772 and 1773. On April 5, 1773, the kingdom of Cooch Behar and the British East India Company signed a defense treaty with the aim of driving out the Bhutanese. Bhutanese coins were produced at that period in Cooch Behar. Following the expulsion of the Bhutanese, Cooch Behar once more emerged as a royal realm, this time under the British East India company’s protection. The design of Cooch Behar Palace is based on Italian Classical architecture.

Geography

North of West Bengal, at 26°22′N 89°29′E, lies Cooch Behar, on the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas. Its 8.29 sq km (3.20 sq mi) area makes it the largest town and district capital in the Cooch Behar District. On the western edge of the town flows the Torsa River. Economy

The few employers in Cooch Behar town are the federal and state governments. Cooch Behar has a sizable government staff in addition to housing a number of district and divisional level offices. Retail items are the primary focus of business; the primary hubs are located on B.S. Road, Rupnarayan Road, Keshab Road, and Bhawaniganj Bazar. On the way to Tufanganj, at Chakchaka, 4 km (2.5 mi) from town, an industrial park has been constructed. Many businesses have established industries there.

Culture

One of the biggest and most established fairs in West Bengal, Ras Mela, takes place in the city each year during Ras Purnima. The fair dates back more than two centuries. At Ras Mela Ground, next to ABN Seal College, the fair is organized by the Cooch Behar Municipality. It turns into the main economic hub of the North Bengal region during the fair. This market attracts vendors and merchants from Bangladesh as well as from all over India. The Ras Chakra was traditionally moved by the Maharajas of Cooch Behar to officially open the fair; currently, the District Magistrate of Cooch Behar District handles this task.
