Dakshina Kannada district is in Karnataka, India, with its main city being Mangalore on the coast. It’s in a place called Tulu Nadu and sits between the Western Ghats on the east and the Arabian Sea on the west. This area gets a lot of rain during the monsoon season. It’s surrounded by Udupi district to the north, Chikmagalur district to the northeast, Hassan district to the east, Kodagu to the southeast, and Kasaragod district in Kerala to the south. In 2011, it had a population of 2,083,625 people. Dakshina Kannada is unique in Karnataka because it has all types of transportation: roads, trains, waterways, and an airport in Mangalore. It’s also known as a major banking center in India.

Geography:

Dakshina Kannada district is in Karnataka, India, and it has two main parts: the western seashore and the eastern Western Ghats. The soil here is mostly lateritic, which has a lot of iron and aluminum.

There are important rivers like Netravathi, Kumaradhara, Gurupura, Shambhavi, Nandini (or Pavanje), and Payaswini, and they all flow into the Arabian Sea. Near Uppinangadi, two rivers, Netravathi and Kumaradhara, come together during the rainy season, and this is called “Sangam,” which means confluence. Close to Mangalore, these rivers meet the Arabian Sea, forming an estuary.

The land here is mostly flat up to 30 km from the coast, but then it becomes hilly as you go east into the Western Ghats. You can find trees like teak, bamboo, and rosewood in these hills. This area is also known to sometimes have earthquakes.

In rural parts of Dakshina Kannada, houses are usually surrounded by farmland or coconut and arecanut plantations, with some distance between them.

The highest point in Dakshina Kannada is Shirlalu village, which is in the Kudremukh range of Belthangady taluk. It’s 1,115 meters (3,658 feet) above sea level.

History:

Dakshin Kannada, located in Karnataka, has a rich history. In ancient times, it was part of Tulu Nadu and mentioned in Sangam literature. Greek sources also noted its prosperity. The Nayakas of Keladi ruled Tulu Nadu in the 16th century, defeating the Portuguese. Later, Hyder Ali captured it in 1763, but the British briefly took Mangalore in 1766. Tipu Sultan recaptured it in 1767.

During the Second Anglo-Mysore War in 1781, the British and Tipu Sultan fought for control. The British eventually took over most of Dakshin Kannada. In 1799, the British defeated Tipu Sultan, and the region came under British rule.

Dakshin Kannada played a crucial role in India’s freedom struggle. Many leaders like Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty and Ullal Srinivas Mallya were from this region.

After India gained independence in 1947, Dakshin Kannada developed rapidly. Today, it is known for its cultural diversity, beautiful beaches, and educational institutions.

Throughout its history, Dakshin Kannada has been a vibrant and important part of Karnataka, contributing to the state’s rich heritage.

Demographics:

In the 2011 census, Dakshina Kannada had a population of 2,089,649, with 1,034,714 males and 1,054,935 females, making it the 220th most populous district in India. The district had a population density of 457 people per square kilometer. Dakshina Kannada boasted a favorable sex ratio of 1018 females for every 1000 males and an impressive literacy rate of 88.62%. Almost half of the population, 47.67%, resided in urban areas.

 Tulu, the district’s primary language, is spoken by 48.57% of the population and has a rich literary tradition. Beary, the second-largest language at 16.07%, is primarily spoken by the Muslim community, known for their trading background. Malayalam, spoken by 9.97%, is used by the Maniyani and Vaniya communities near the Kerala border. Konkani, spoken by 9.91%, is prevalent in Mangalore city and urban areas. Various Kannada dialects, including Are Bhashe and Havigannada, are also spoken. Deccani Urdu, Tamil, and Hindi are minority languages. Koraga, an indigenous tribal language, is still spoken by some residents in the district.
