Darbhanga, the fifth-largest city in Bihar, India, is a municipal corporation and a significant city in North Bihar. It acts as the main center for both Darbhanga district and Darbhanga division. The name ‘Darbhanga’ is thought to come from ‘Dwar Banga’ or ‘Dari-Banga,’ which means ‘door of Bengal.’ Additionally, Darbhanga is a key medical hub in North Bihar because it hosts the Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital, and the state’s second AIIMS is planned to be built here.

Darbhanga is among the oldest cities in India. For generations, it has been a center for music, folk art, and literature in Sanskrit, Hindi, and Maithili, giving the city a rich cultural heritage. It is widely recognized as the “Cultural Capital of Bihar” because of this strong cultural influence.

History:

The city of Darbhanga, once the capital of the Darbhanga Raj established in the 16th century, is known for its Anandbagh Palace. It became a municipality in 1864. Darbhanga houses the Kameshwara Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University, set up in 1961 on the palace grounds, and the Lalit Narayan Mithila University, founded in 1972. The city also boasts a museum with archaeological, historical, and handicraft displays.

Since the late 18th century, Darbhanga has been a hub for music, particularly known for producing famous dhrupad musicians. As a major junction for rail and road, it trades in agricultural products, mangoes, and fish, and has a light manufacturing industry.

Under British rule, Darbhanga was part of Sarkar Tirhut until 1875, when it became its own district. Its subdivisions, Darbhanga Sadar, Madhubani, and Samastipur (formerly Tajpur), were established in 1845, 1866, and 1867, respectively.

Geography:

Darbhanga district spans 2,279 square kilometers. It is surrounded by Madhubani district to the north, Samastipur district to the south, Saharsa district to the east, and Sitamarhi and Muzaffarpur districts to the west. Situated in Mithilanchal, Darbhanga district features a large, fertile, alluvial plain with no hills. The land gently slopes from north to south and has a depression in the center.

Demographics:

According to the 2011 Census of India, Darbhanga’s urban area had a population of 296,039, while the wider district housed 3 million people. This makes it the fifth-largest city in Bihar based on urban population. The city’s population includes 196,573 males (52.6%) and 183,552 females (47.4%). Darbhanga’s average literacy rate is 79.40%, with male literacy at 85.08% and female literacy at 73.08%. However, a document from the District Magistrate’s office in Darbhanga, dated March 6, 2021, indicates that the urban population has increased to 380,125.

At the time of the 2011 census, 50.25% of Darbhanga’s population spoke Maithili as their first language, followed by 26.80% speaking Urdu and 20.98% Hindi.
