Dehradun, alternatively referred to as Dehra Doon, serves as both the capital and the most densely populated city within the state of Uttarakhand, India. This vibrant city operates as the administrative hub for its namesake district and is under the jurisdiction of the Dehradun Municipal Corporation. Moreover, Dehradun holds the distinction of hosting the winter sessions of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly, functioning as the state’s winter capital. Nestled within the Garhwal region, it also accommodates the Divisional Commissioner’s headquarters, further enhancing its significance as a key administrative and political center in the state of Uttarakhand.

History

Dehradun, often referred to as “Doon Valley,” holds a rich historical tapestry intertwined with the epic narratives of the Ramayana and Mahabharata. According to legend, it is said that after the epic battle between Ravana and Lord Rama, the victorious brothers, Rama and Lakshmana, graced this sacred land with their presence. Moreover, Dehradun earned the moniker ‘Dronanagari’ in honor of Dronacharya, the revered royal guru to both the Kauravas and Pandavas in the Mahabharata. It is believed that Dronacharya was not only born here but also made Dehradun his residence, further deepening the city’s association with these timeless tales of ancient Indian mythology.

Demography

As of the 2011 census, Dehradun city was home to a population of 578,420, comprising 303,411 males and 275,009 females. The city’s sex ratio stands at 906 females per 1000 males. The majority of Dehradun’s population consists of natives of Uttarakhand, with a sex ratio of 907 females per 1000 males and a child sex ratio of 873 girls per 1000 boys, which is lower than the national average. According to the Census India report of 2011, the number of children under the age of six in Dehradun city was recorded at 80,180. These demographic statistics provide a snapshot of the city’s composition at that time.

Geography

Dehradun is nestled in the picturesque Doon Valley, with its terrain spanning varying altitudes. The city’s elevation ranges from 410 meters (1,350 feet) in Clement Town to over 700 meters (2,300 feet) in Malsi, situated about 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) from the city center. On average, Dehradun rests at an elevation of 450 meters (1,480 feet) above sea level. Notably, Malsi serves as the gateway to the Lesser Himalayan Range, extending towards the renowned hill station of Mussoorie and beyond. In the Dehradun district, the Jaunsar-Bawar hills rise majestically to heights of 3,700 meters (12,100 feet) above sea level, while the scenic Mussoorie region reaches elevations ranging from 1,870 to 2,017 meters (6,135 to 6,617 feet) above sea level.

Economy

Dehradun’s economic vitality primarily stems from its thriving tourism sector, buoyed by the enchanting national parks, majestic mountain peaks, and rich historical sites that surround the city. With a per capita income averaging approximately $2,993 (as of 2020), Dehradun has witnessed robust economic expansion over the past two decades, although citations are needed to verify these claims. The city has undergone a significant commercial and information technology boom, thanks in part to the establishment of Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) and Special Economic Zones (SEZs). These initiatives have played a pivotal role in fostering economic growth and innovation within the region.
