Dharwad, an administrative district in Karnataka, India, has its main city called Dharwad. It’s situated about 425 km northwest of Bangalore and 421 km southeast of Pune, on National Highway 4 (NH4), a major road between Chennai and Pune.

Before 1997, Dharwad district was much larger, covering 13,738 square kilometers. However, in 1997, some parts of it were used to create two new districts, Gadag and Haveri. Additionally, a portion of Dharwad district was combined with areas from three other districts to form a new district called Davanagere. This change reduced the size of Dharwad district.

History:

Dharwad district has a rich history dating back to the early Paleolithic age. It was ruled by various dynasties over the centuries, including the Badami and Kalyan Chalukyas, Rastrakutas, Vijayanagar, Adilshahi, Mysore kingdom, and Peshawas of Pune. The influence of Marathi culture was notable during the Peshwa rule in the 19th century. Under British rule, Dharwad became an educational hub, with Kannada becoming the prominent language.

After India gained independence in 1947, Dharwad became part of Bombay State but was later merged with Mysore and renamed Karnataka in 1972. Dharwad is known for institutions like Karnataka University and the University of Agricultural Sciences. In 1962, the towns of Dharwad and Hubli were merged to form the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation.

Geography: 

Dharwad district is in the northern part of Karnataka, covering 4263 square kilometers. It’s bordered by Belgaum to the north, Gadag to the east, Haveri to the south, and Uttara Kannada to the west, all within Karnataka. The district’s elevation is about 800 meters above sea level, giving it a pleasant climate. The region can be divided into three parts: Malnad, Semi-Malnad, and Maidan, all of which receive a good amount of rainfall and have lush vegetation. Some areas, like Kalghatagi and Alnavar in Dharwad taluka, get more rain than others in the district.

Economy:

In Dharwad district, farmers grow crops like jowar, maize, wheat, cotton, onions, and rice. They also cultivate fruits like mangoes, papaya, and bananas. Additionally, there are small businesses that make products like puffed rice, flattened rice, and cooking oils from these crops.

Demographics:

In 2011, Dharwad district had a population of 1,847,023, making it the 256th most populous district in India. It had 434 people living in every square kilometer of land. The district had more females than males, with 967 females for every 1000 males. About 80.3% of the people in Dharwad could read and write. Most of the population, about 56.82%, lived in cities. As for languages, 70.08% of the people spoke Kannada, 18.40% spoke Urdu, 3.16% spoke Marathi, and smaller percentages spoke Telugu, Gujarati, or Hindi as their first language.
