History

It’s widely accepted that “Dhenka,” a Savara leader who governed the area, is responsible for the district’s name. Due to the lack of written records, historical details regarding Dhenkanal’s prehistoric past remain mysterious. However, the rock inscriptions and archeological findings aid in providing some prehistoric facts about the District. The Sattavahana Dynasty controlled the District in the second century A.D., according to the inscription found on the Nasik rock. The Guptas headed the government throughout the third and fourth centuries A.D. Bhauma Karas was the ruler of Dhenkanl in the sixth and seventh centuries A.D.

Geography

One of Odisha’s centrally positioned districts is Dhenkanal. It is located between latitudes 20° 29′ and 21° 11′ North and longitudes 85° 58′ and 86° 2′ East. The closest airport is 52.12 kilometers away, at Biju Patnaik Airport. It shares borders with the districts of Angul and Kendujhar to the north, Jajpur to the east, Cuttack to the south, and Angul to the west. The district is primarily made up of plains, although it also has a number of irregular hill ranges inside it and along its southern boundary. The district’s principal waterway is the Brahmani waterway.
