About East Khasi Hills
An administrative district in the Indian state of Meghalaya is called East Khasi Hills. The district office is situated in Shillong. The district is home to 825,922 people (as of 2011) and covers an area of 2752 square kilometer. Among the twelve districts of Meghalaya, it has the highest population as of 2011.
History
On October 28, 1976, the erstwhile Khasi Hills district was split into the East and West Khasi Hills districts. East Khasi Hills District was further separated into East Khasi Hills District and Ri-Bhoi District, two administrative districts, on June 4, 1992.
Geography
The East Khasi Hills District headquarters are located at Shillong. The East Khasi Hills District, which encompasses 2,748 square kilometer, is located in the center of Meghalaya. About 25°07″ & 25°41″ N Lat. and 91°21″ & 92°09″ E Long. are where it stands.
The district’s northern boundary is formed by the plain of Ri-Bhoi District, which gradually rises to the Shillong Plateau’s rolling grasslands scattered with river valleys. The southern boundary of the district falls sharply, creating deep gorges and ravines in Mawsynram and Shella-Bholaganj, a community and rural development block that borders Bangladesh. The West Khasi Hills District borders the district on the west and the Jaintia Hills District on the east.
Climate
The district experiences a variety of climates, from mild in the plateau area to warmer tropical and subtropical areas in the northern and southern sections. The south-west monsoon, which usually starts in May and lasts until September, has an impact on the entire district. With the exception of the comparatively dry time that often occurs between December and March, the most of the year is spent in humid weather.
Demography
The population of the East Khasi Hills district, as of the 2011 census, is 825,922, or about the same as that of the US state of South Dakota or the nation of Comoros. Based on this, it is ranked 478th out of 640 in India. The population density of the district is 292 people per square kilometer, or 760 people per square mile. From 2001 to 2011, the population grew at a pace of 24.68%. In East Khasi Hills, there are 1008 girls for every 1000 males and an 84.7% literacy rate. The most ethnically varied district in Meghalaya is East Khasi Hills, home to residents from all across India.
Transport
NH 44 connects Shillong, the district headquarters and the state capital, to Guwahati and Silchar, spanning 103 km and 240 km, respectively. The closest airport and railhead are at Guwahati. Umroi, 35 kilometers from Shillong, has an airport that is suited for small aircraft. Tractors, jeeps, and trucks are used to transport agricultural produce as well as other goods. Motorable roads provide excellent connectivity between Shillong and other areas of the State. throughout a similar vein, roads connect each block headquarters throughout the district. Unfortunately, there is a lack of suitable transportation and weak connectivity between the settlements in the inner areas.
