The district of Purba Medinipur is a unit of government in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is the southernmost district of West Bengal’s five administrative divisions, the Medinipur division. the Tamluk headquarters. It was established on January 1, 2002, following the division of Medinipur into its northern and western regions, Purba Medinipur and Paschim Medinipur. The Bay of Bengal borders the state of Odisha to the south; the Hooghly River and South 24 Parganas district border the state to the east; Howrah district borders the state to the northeast; and Paschim Medinipur district borders the state to the west.

History

Scholars think that the ancient Indian port of Tamralipta was located near what is now Tamluk. It is mentioned in the literature of Chinese monks and travelers Faxian and Xuanzang, as well as the Greco-Egyptian writer Ptolemy (150 AD). Ashoka, the Mauryan ruler, used it as his principal port. Geography

The eastern coastal plains and the lower Indo-Gangetic Plain comprise the Purba Medinipur district. The large area of land is covered in younger, coastal alluvial deposits that make up the alluvium. The region is elevated to a height of around 10 meters above mean sea level. The district’s southern and south-eastern borders are characterized by a lengthy 65.5-kilometer shoreline.
