Etah, a thriving municipality city, serves as the administrative hub of the Etah District in Uttar Pradesh, India. Situated within the Aligarh Division, Etah enjoys a strategic position along the Delhi-Kanpur Highway, famously known as NH 91 or GT Road. History

Etah, located in the cultural heartland of Braj, has a rich historical tapestry. It was a prominent part of the Surasena Mahajanapada during the Vedic Age and witnessed successive rule by mighty empires such as the Mauryas, Guptas, Scythians, Kushans, and Indo-Greeks, eventually falling under local Yadav rulers. Positioned as a pivotal midpoint along the Kanpur-Delhi Highway, Etah also holds significance for its role in the historic Revolt of 1857. In antiquity, Etah was known as “Aintha,” signifying the Yadav community’s territorial disposition. Legend has it that a fox’s bold response to pursuing dogs led to its unique name, which evolved into “Etah” over time.

Demography

According to the 2011 census data, the urban agglomeration of Etah boasted a population of 131,023 individuals, comprising 69,446 males and 61,577 females. Impressively, the city also demonstrated a commendable literacy rate of 85.62%. Within this population, 11,786 people belonged to scheduled castes, with a mere 65 individuals hailing from scheduled tribes. In terms of language, the residents predominantly converse in Brajbhasha and Kannauji, reflecting the rich linguistic diversity that thrives within the city. Etah, nestled in an agrarian landscape, thrives primarily on farming, with a scarcity of large industries but a presence of some factories. A notable one is Hindustan Unilever Ltd., engaged in extensive brass casting work in Jalesar. The region’s fertile land and favorable climate foster the cultivation of various crops, including paddy, sugarcane, sunflower, and oilseeds. Etah serves as a pivotal hub for the gathering and distribution of these agricultural products. While there are a few agro-processing units, the town’s economy predominantly revolves around agriculture, providing livelihoods to its residents and sustaining its rich agrarian heritage.
