History

Established on April 1, 1991, the Garhwa district emerged as an autonomous entity, separating from Palamau district. Formerly a part of Palamau district’s Garhwa Subdivision, this district comprises eight Blocks. Positioned in the southwestern edge of Palamu division, it spans between latitudes 23060’ and 24039’ N and longitudes 83022’ and 84000’ E. Bordered by the Sone River to the north, Chhattisgarh’s  expanse to the south, Palamau district to the east, and the Surguja district of Chhattisgarh and Sonebhadra district of U.P. to the west, Garhwa District is integral to the Palamau Commissionery. It encompasses 19 blocks and two subdivisions, Garhwa and Nagar-Untrai.

Geography

Garhwa stands at 24.18°N 83.82°E, boasting an average elevation of 197 meters (646 feet). The closest railway hub, Garhwa Town, operates under the Indian Railway Code GHQ,[3] offering convenient access. Another nearby station, Garwa Road, merely 10 kilometers away, functions under the Indian Railway Code GHD. These strategic rail links enhance connectivity, facilitating travel and commerce in the region. Garhwa Town and Garwa Road stations serve as pivotal transport nodes, efficiently connecting Garhwa to broader rail networks. As per the 2001 India census,[5] Garhwa recorded a population of 46,059. Males accounted for 54% while females constituted 46% of the total populace. The town boasted an average literacy rate of 61%, surpassing the national average of 59.5%. Specifically, male literacy stood at 69% and female literacy at 51%. Notably, 17% of Garhwa’s population was under the age of 6.
