About Godda District

Godda district, nestled in the northeastern region of Jharkhand state, India, is one of the twenty-four districts that make up the state. Its origins trace back to the historical Santhal Parganas district. The charming town of Godda serves as the district’s administrative hub. Encompassing a sprawling geographical expanse of 2110 square kilometers, Godda district is home to a vibrant population of approximately 1,313,551 residents. Its unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty makes it a captivating destination within Jharkhand, offering a glimpse into the rich tapestry of eastern India’s diverse heritage.

History

The historical roots of Godda District trace back to the Stone Age, with an abundance of stone tools and artifacts, such as hammers, axes, arrowheads, and agricultural implements, unearthed in the region, notably within Santhal Pargana. However, the area lacks extensive historical documentation. Several pieces of evidence also suggest the existence of a civilization during the Vedic period. Despite the scarcity of written records, these archaeological finds provide tantalizing glimpses into the ancient past of Godda District, offering valuable insights into its rich and diverse history.

Demography

According to the 2011 census, Godda district in India boasts a population of 1,313,551, akin to the entire nation of Mauritius or the US state of New Hampshire. This positions it at the 372nd rank among Indian districts. The district demonstrates a population density of 622 individuals per square kilometer, marking a significant growth rate of 25.14% from 2001 to 2011. In terms of gender distribution, Godda records a sex ratio of 933 females for every 1000 males, accompanied by a literacy rate of 56.40%. Economy

Godda, primarily renowned for the Rajmahal coalfield in Lalmatia, stands as an essential component of Jharkhand’s topography, characterized by its rolling hills and quaint forests. The coal mine within, an integral part of the expansive ECL coalfields, ranks among Asia’s largest. Up until the late 1980s, Godda remained cloaked in lush forests, distanced from the advances of science and technology, akin to other Jharkhand districts, existing in a metaphorical dark age. However, a transformative moment occurred when a team from the Geological Survey of India unearthed abundant coal reserves beneath the Rajmahal Hills, paving the way for progress, managed by the Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Ltd.
