Gonda district, situated in Uttar Pradesh, India, is both the administrative hub of the Devipatan Division and the location of its district headquarters, Gonda city. History

Gonda’s historical evolution is intertwined with shifting territorial boundaries. Initially, it was a part of the Nizamat of Gorakhpur. However, following Gorakhpur’s transfer to the British in 1801, Gonda became part of Bahraich district. The British later established Gonda as an independent district in 1856 when they annexed Awadh. In another notable development, the British government ceded portions of Gonda district, lying between Baghaura Tal and the Arrah river, to Nepal in 1875. These historical events have shaped Gonda’s administrative and geographic identity over time.
