History

Hamirpur’s history intertwines with the Katoch dynasty, ruling amid the Ravi and Satluj rivers. Linked to the Jallandhar-Trigarta empire in ancient times per the “Puranas” and Panini’s “Ashtadhyai,” Panini hailed the locals as valiant warriors. This valor persisted through generations, reflected in the region’s significant representation in the Indian Defence Forces. Under Gupta reign, it thrived, later facing control shifts to Mohammed Gazani, Timurlang, and successive Sultans. Amidst feuding feudal chiefs, the Katoch dynasty, led by Hamir Chand (1700-1740 A.D.), subdued discord, asserting dominance for an orderly society, marking their ascendancy in the region’s governance.
