Haridwar district, alternatively spelled as Hardwar, is situated in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, India. Its administrative center and largest city is Haridwar itself. Encircled by neighboring districts, it shares boundaries with Dehradun to the north and east, Pauri Garhwal to the east, and the Uttar Pradesh districts of Muzaffarnagar and Bijnor to the south, while Saharanpur lies to the west. History

Demography

According to the 2011 India census, Haridwar district recorded a population of 1,890,422, marking a significant increase from the 2001 population of 1,447,187. Within Haridwar city, there were 310,562 residents in 2011. The gender distribution showed 54% males and 46% females. Haridwar also boasted a commendable literacy rate of 70%, surpassing the national average of 59.5%. The male literacy rate stood at 75%, while female literacy was at 64%. Additionally, 12% of Haridwar’s population was under the age of six, highlighting the city’s demographic diversity and growth over the years.

Geography

The Ganges originates in the mountainous terrain and gracefully descends onto the plains. Throughout its course, the river’s waters remain predominantly clear and refreshingly cold, except during the monsoon season when sediments from the upper regions mingle with it. The Ganges meanders through a network of channels known as aits, many of which are adorned with lush woodlands. Additional seasonal streams like Ranipur Rao, Pathri Rao, Ravi Rao, Harnaui Rao, and Begham Nadi contribute to its flow. A substantial portion of the district is enveloped by forests, with the presence of Rajaji National Park, making it an enticing haven for wildlife enthusiasts and adventure seekers.

Economy

Agriculture forms the backbone of this well-irrigated district. The journey towards industrialization commenced in the pre-Uttarakhand 1960s era with the establishment of Central Government-owned Public Sector units, including the Indian Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Ltd (IDPL) and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited. In recent times, the State Industrial Development Corporation of Uttarakhand (SIDCUL) has established a new industrial development zone near Shivalik Nagar, Haridwar, fostering industrial growth. Renowned companies like Hindustan Lever, Dabur, Mahendra & Mahendra, and Havells have relocated here, contributing significantly to the district’s industrial progress and development aspirations.
