Haveri district is in the state of Karnataka, India. In 2011, it had a population of 1,597,668 people, with about 20.78% living in urban areas. The main center of the district is called Haveri.

History:

The core area of Western Chalukya monuments encompasses places like Badami, Sudi, Annigeri, Itagi (Mahadeva Temple), Gadag, Lakkundi, Lakshmeshwar, Dambal, Haveri, Bankapura, Rattahalli, Kuruvatti, Bagali, Balligavi, Chaudayyadanapura, Galaganatha, and Hangal. These areas are rich in soapstone, which made it possible to create these historical monuments. Haveri is also part of this significant architectural region.

Haveri district has a long history dating back to ancient times. There are around 1300 stone inscriptions from various rulers like the Chalukyas and Rastrakutas found in the district. Notable rulers include the Bankapura Challaketaru, Guttavula Guttaru, Kadambas of Hangal, and Nurumbad. Prominent figures like Devendramunigalu, the teacher of Kannada Adikavi Pampa, and Ajitasenacharya, the teacher of Ranna Chavundaraya, lived in Bankapura. The area also served as the second capital of Hoysala Vishnuvardhana. Guttaru ruled independently in Guttal village during the 12th and 13th centuries, and Shasanas discovered in Chaudayyadanapura reveal Mallideva’s role as Mandalika. The Mukteshwara temple in Chaudayyadanapura was built under the leadership of Jatacholina.

During the rule of the Kalyani Chalukyas, the Kadambas of Nurumbad governed around 100 villages, with Rattihalli as their capital.

The name “Haveri” comes from two Kannada words, “Havu,” which means snake, and “keri,” which means lake, combining to form “Havukeri.”
