Covering a total area of 4,526 square kilometers, the district is home to a population of 1,177,345, with approximately 15.60% residing in urban areas as of the 2011 census.[2] Interestingly, Hingoli held historical significance as it once served as the Nizams’ military base, strategically positioned along the Vidharbha border. This historical connection adds depth to the district’s rich heritage and unique character, making it an intriguing destination for those interested in exploring Maharashtra’s history and culture.
History
In 1853, the British East India Company assumed administration of the province from the Nizam through a treaty, leading to its division into two districts. South Berar, centered in Hingoli, and North Berar, with its headquarters in Buldana, were overseen by deputy commissioners. However, the Indian Rebellion of 1857 prompted the return of Hingoli and its neighboring areas to the Nizam. Subsequently, the province was restructured into two districts: East Berar, headquartered in Amraoti, and West Berar, with its administrative center in Akola. This historical realignment reflected the complex dynamics of colonial rule and territorial changes in the region.
