Howrah Pincodes

West Bengal, an Indian state, contains the city of Howrah. On the Hooghly River’s western bank, Howrah is situated across from Kolkata, its twin city. It is the administrative center of the Howrah Sadar subdivision and is located inside the Howrah district. After Kolkata and Asansol, it is the third most populous city in West Bengal. Howrah serves as a major center for transportation and the entry point to West Bengal and Kolkata.

Etymology

The word “Haor,” which is Bengali for “fluvial swampy lake,” derives from the word “sedimentological depression,” which is where water, muck, and organic matter gather. In contrast to the western region of Bengal (now West Bengal), the word itself was more commonly used in the eastern region of Bengal (now Bangladesh).

History

The district of Howrah is located in an area that was once home to the ancient Bengali kingdom of Bhurshut, although the city itself has a history that extends back more than 500 years. In his journal, written about 1578, Venetian adventurer Cesare Federici spoke of a place named Buttor during his travels in India between 1565 and 1579. This was, by the sound of his account, a place into which big ships might pass (the Hoogli river), maybe a commercial port. This location is recognizable as the Bator neighborhood of today. Bipradas Pipilai’s 1495 poem Manasamangal, written in Bengali, also made reference to Bator.

There were 1,077,075 people living in Howrah with households as of the 2011 Indian census. Bally had 293,373 residents in 2011. Howrah’s population increased from 84,069 in the British India census of 1896 to 157,594 in the 1901 census. Because there were so many employment opportunities, the male population increased by 100% during this time, whereas the female population only increased by 60%. This rapid expansion was caused by these job opportunities.

Climate

The climate in Howrah is tropical and wet/dry. Here, the summers receive a lot of rain, but the winters receive very little. On average, the temperature is 26.3 °C. Annual precipitation is 1744 mm.

Economy

Howrah, also referred to as the “Sharley of the East,” is a center for the light engineering sector. Bishop Reginald Heber gave the description of Howrah as “chiefly inhabited by shipbuilders” in 1823. Small engineering enterprises can be found all across Howrah, especially in the vicinity of Belilios Road and Howrah station. Nevertheless, in the twenty-first century, these companies are failing. The Liluah area is home to numerous foundries. Howrah is home to Burn Standard Company’s oldest production facility, a significant player in the heavy engineering sector.

Administration

The Howrah Municipal Corporation is in charge of running the city. On December 10, 2018, the last board of HMC’s reign came to an end. The West Bengal government appointed an unelected board of administrators to oversee the corporation’s operations from that point on. The city’s law enforcement is under the jurisdiction of the Howrah City Police.
