About Jaintia Hills

The United Khasi Jaintia Hills District Council was replaced by the Jaintia Hills District, a district in Meghalaya, India, which was founded in 1972 and has its headquarters in Jowai. It was formerly a component of the Jaintia Kingdom. The Pnar, the War, the Bhoi (Karbis), the Tiwa (Lalung), and the Biates are the current residents of the District. The district was divided into two districts in 2012:

The East Jaintia Hills district is based in Khliehriat,

whereas the West Jaintia Hills district is based in Jowai.

East Jaintia Hills

The district of East Jaintia Hills is located in the Indian state of Meghalaya, with its headquarters at Khliehriat. On July 31, 2012, the district was divided from the Jaintia Hills district. The district’s two community and rural development blocks are Khliehriat and Saipung.

History

The former Jaintia Hills District was divided into the East Jaintia Hills District on July 31, 2012. On August 14, 1976, Khliehriat was established as an administrative unit. On May 27, 1982, it was elevated to the status of a civil sub division, and on August 14, 1976, it was designated as the district headquarters.

Demography

There are 1,22,939 people living in East Jaintia Hills, primarily Pnar (also called Jaintia), Khynriam, and Biates. There are 118,158 (96.11%) Scheduled Tribes in the country. 81.39% of people spoke Pnar as their first language, 9.04% Biate, 6.30% Khasi, and 3.16% War at the time of the 2011 census.

West Jaintia Hills

In the Indian state of Meghalaya, there is an administrative district called West Jaintia Hills. Located on 3819 km2, the united district (Jaintia Hills District) was established on February 22, 1972. As of 2011, the population was 272,185. With a curcumin level of 7–9%, higher than other turmeric varieties’ 3% or less, it is among the best types in the world. It has been designated under the Indian government’s One District, One Product (ODOP) program. Additionally, the State of Meghalaya has submitted an application for a Geographical Indication tag.
